However, this application package is a lengthy, specific, and detailed. The more tips you can gather and incorporate into your application package, the better. Some CDP announcements received hundreds and even thousands of applications. As such, the resume and written narratives need to be highly competitive for these coveted CDP positions, which can lead to your ECQs being certified by Office of Personnel Management. You will then have the opportunity to then apply for Senior Executive Service (SES) positions with only a resume and TQs going forward. Th is upfront homework is paramount in the process of developing a CDP resume package. Here are seventeen suggestions from a CDP Executive Review Board to help you develop a stellar CDP resume package, edited by Kathryn Troutman and Diane Hudson, co-authors of The New SES ApplicationWrite tightly and concisely. Read the announcement in its entirety and follow the rules for the required resume length for an application. For example, the Air Force SES federal resume is four pages. If the length of the resume is notlage specified, do your best to keep the SES CDP resume around five pages.Feature your highest level of accomplishments within the past five years. Your current position and second most recent position should be the longest in length in the resume. As you move back in your chronology, the descriptions of your duties and accomplishments should be shorter. This format will help you keep the resume to about five pages.Be sure that the resume states and demonstrates how you have met the mission of your agency. Speak to the mission of the agency in your resume and across your accomplishments.Includea short profile for the top of the resume, not to exceed 8 to 10 lines. It needs to be short and powerful, grabbing the attention of the reader. Use active verbs and tie the language to your accomplishments. Instead of saying Excellent communicator in writing and orally, say Communicate with senior level leadership internally and stakeholders externally leading to signed agreement for multi-million dollar program implementation. Tell what you do and how you apply your expertise.Use active voice verbs that represent leadership, agency-level programs, innovation, first-time program launches, high-level expertise, decisiveness, creativity, resiliency, and customer service. We included many active voice keywords in The New SES Application on pages 71 to 81.Analyze the keywords from the technical qualifications and specialized experience in the announcement and integrate the keywords into your resume.Use leadership language. Do not use the following words in your SES CDP resume tasked with helped with assisted with participated in duties include perform duties as team member while serving as or other similar passive language.Your CDP resume should match your ECQs. The resume should include short bullet statements that describe the stories used in the ECQs. The resume should support the ECQs.Include your relevant and recent education, training, awards, presentations, conferences attended, articles/publications, committee memberships, board memberships, and certifications.Add important and relevant non-profit activities, board memberships and outside interests to the resume. These entries could help you to stand out against your competition.Limit the use of personal pronoun I. You can use the personal pronoun I limited in accomplishments, as personal narrative statements of success. Do write using first person narrative in the ECQs and TQs.Do not incl ude quotes from supervisors or accolades by others. You have to prove your good works by performance, not quotes.Do not include paragraphs or long sentences with historical or philosophical statements before each accomplishment. Just write the accomplishment. If some background is needed, add it into the accomplishment statement.Do not overwrite with processes that you followed to achieve the goal. Include three or four administrative steps, but no more. Focus on the context (breadth and scope of the situation), your challenge, several significant actions, and the results that made a difference to organizational performance.Pay close attention to the Technical Qualifications. They are read BEFORE the ECQs. The TQs represent your technical expertise.Be sure to speak about supervising a culturally diverse team.Hit the mark with your resume. Remember that you are applying for an executive leadership position to lead change, lead people, achieve results, demonstrate business acumen and build coalitions. The resume should be written to meet the needs of your stakeholders, the American public, and staff. Demonstrate that you can solve problems to achieve an objective with flexibility and resilience.Use these tips as you write your CDP application to help you set yourself apart from your competition and good luck Kathryn Troutman and Diane Hudson BurnsGET THE BOOK2nd Edition available Dec.2015$21.95 (includes postage)

New study Limiting social media use benefits mental health

New study Limiting social media use benefits mental healthNew study Limiting social media use benefits mental healthHow many minutes (erm, hurs) a day do you spend on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and more? And how does that powerful vortex of social media tend to make you feel? If it leaves you more lonely and depressed than connected and motivated, youre not alone. In fact, thefirst causal study conducted at the University of Pennsylvaniajust proved that this negative relationship exists - and that limiting your exposure can benefit your mental health significantly.Inthe study, which will be published in DecembersJournal of Social and Clinical Psychology, researchers recruited 143 college students between the ages of 18 and 22 for two trials - one completed in the spring term and the other completed in the fall. All participants were required to have an iPhone and accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. The researchers first monitored the students for a week to get a snapsho t of their typical social media use. They also gave them questionnaires to assess their well-being relating to social support, a fear of missing out (FOMO), loneliness, autonomy and self-acceptance, anxiety, depression and self-esteem.Then, for the next three weeks of both trials, the participants were separated into two groups. The first group continued their typical use of Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat while the second group spent only 10 minutes on each platform each day (a maximum of 30 minutes). At the end of the trials when evaluations were recorded, it was clear that less time spent on social media lumineszenzdiode to better mental health.Using less social media than you normally would leads to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness, lead study author Melissa G. Hunt said in a statement. These effects are particularly pronounced for folks who were more depressed when they came into the study. The study doescome with its limitations, however. For instance, s ince the researchers only monitored studentsphone activity, they cant guarantee that the participants didnt sneak onto Facebook and Instagram on their laptops at some point in the trials. It also wasnt inclusive of all social media platforms, leaving out big players like Twitter and Pinterest. Beyond these components, we now need to see what happens when the trial length is extended beyond a few weeks and over a larger, more diverse sample size because those adjustments could reveal unique shifts as well.On the positive side, its worth noting that the study didnt ask any student to abandon social media altogether because thats simply unrealistic at this point in our digitally connected society. The goal wasnt to remove these environmental factors entirely, but rather to see what happens when you are mindful of how much time you engage with them. And the results give us hope that if we set reasonable time limits on ourselves when it comes to swiping, scrolling and posting, we would p robably feel that much more content with our lives and ourselves. Now, lets put our phones down and go out for a cup of coffee (no Insta stories of latte art allowed).Thispostwas originally published onSwirled.comin the Thrive section, which covers valuable career and personal finance content for Millennials.

5 Most-asked Job Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

5 Most-asked Job Interview Questions and How to Answer Them5 Most-asked Job Interview Questions and How to Answer ThemIn todays job industry, work experience is not everything. Once you get past the basic requirements, theres only one thing left standing between you and your dream job The Job Interview.A lot of people, especially recent graduates, find this to be challenging and thats normal. They dont have prior experience with job vorstellungsgesprchs, and tend to view the interviewer as an omniscient being that can read right through them. How can you know exactly what the interviewer is expecting from you if youve never been to a job interview before? Well, the process is actually pretty simple, and knowing beforehand the questions theyll ask, as well as how to answer them will help you overcome this.**What is your greatest strength?**This one is a bit self-explanatory, but there are small nuances you should consider. First of all, try to consider the job youre applying for and adjust your answer accordingly. Say, if youre a PR specialist and tend to think outside the box, make sure to mention some of your achievements that portray this quality. Dont say anything too generic or irrelevant such as being a quick learner or a team-player, and again, make sure to back it up with prior experience. In this way the interviewer will know that youre aware of exactly what youre signing up for. 2. **What is your greatest weakness?*For this question, you dont want to say anything related to the job. For example, you shouldnt say at the job interview that youre bad at communications if youre applying for a sales ort. After all, communications is what a sales job is all about. You dont want to hire someone whos saying straight off the bat that hes bad at the job, would you? The best way to go around the question is to mention a minor weakness or possibly an undeveloped skill. The weakness itself doesnt really matter, as long as its not directly related to the job youre applying for. In addition, mention what youve done or are doing to overcome it. For example you are applying for a programmer position you can say youve had a weakness with communication (not very relevant to the job, but still a very important office skills), but youve taken classes in public speaking and attended seminars to overcome it. This way, youre turning what could have been a negative answer into a positive one. You do mention a weakness of yours, but youre also making it clear that youre someone who strives for self-improvement. 3. *Tell us about yourself.*When asked on the spot, answering this question correctly can be a bit challenging. Which is why, you should always be prepared to give a small sales pitch about yourself. Youre almost guaranteed to get asked this question on most job interviews, and having a general speech ready can definitely come in handy. You should not make it too obvious, though. Just make an outline of what youre going to talk about, touching th e most important achievements in your life. Follow this rule of thumb and youre certainly going to be one step closer to landing the job. 4. *Why are you interested in our company?*This is where a little research about the company before the job interview comes in hand. Companies dont want to hire a person whos applied to 50 different jobs, hoping to get lucky with one of them. Theyd rather hire someone whos aiming for 2 or 3 best-fit jobs and has done his homework. You should research about the company culture, the workplace, the projects they work on, etc. For example, some companies have a more independent work-place, with minor supervision from the higher-ups. In that case, you could say that youre independent, and can work without someone guiding you. 5. *Do you have any questions?**Now, a seemingly unimportant question, this is a great opportunity to show how interested you are in the company. Most people answer with a simple no, so to put yourself above everyone else ask away The trick is not to ask the most obvious question (something you couldve learned online by yourself). For example, what would my daily routine be like for this position? or even something related to personal career development and the interview in general like how would you satz my performance on this job interview, and what would you recommend to improve my skills? Asking questions shows that youve done your homework and are genuinely interested in the company. And finally, remember that even if you dont succeed in the first job interview, it will still be a tremendously valuable learning experience.
